The History of Barrhead
Barrhead
Seven miles south west of Glasgow, lying on Levern Waters, Barrhead is an industrial town in East Renfrewshire. It developed from a number of smaller villages in the late 18th Century in association with the textile industry. There are plenty of local amenities such as a sports centre with pool and gym, a golf course and local shopping facilities.
Neilston
This former textile village is situated on Levern Waters in the old county of Renfrewshire, two miles south west of Barrhead and nine miles south-west of Glasgow. It became a known for cotton bleaching and calico printing in the eighteenth century and continued printing and spinning cotton into the twentieth century.
Uplawmoor
Uplawmoor used to be a thriving mining village three miles south west of Neiston. In the hills over Loch Libo, there are old mining shafts and some of the buildings are over two hundred years old.
